Firecats Add Receiver Matt Burstein to High Powered Offense

Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats announced today that receiver Matt Burstein has joined the team adding to an already potent offense. A 5-year arenafootball2 veteran, Burstein was named the 2004 af2 Offensive Player of the Year as a member of the Cape Fear Wildcats.

Burstein finished the 2004 campaign with 119 catches for an af2 best 1,648 yards and a league leading 43 touchdowns to go along with his league best 270 points. He also returned 52 kickoffs for 1,013 yards and a pair of scores. His numbers were good enough to set single season team records for receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, kickoff return yards and points for the Wildcats. In 2005 the franchise relocated to Albany Georgia to become the South Georgia Wildcats.

“I’ve been thinking about playing again for awhile,” Burstein said of putting the pads back on. “The situation is right for me, there’s a great group of guys here and this team is good enough to win it all. I just want to help contribute.”

By joining the Firecats he once again becomes teammates with QB Chris Wallace and WR Chris McKinney, all three former Cape Fear players. In addition to the Wildcats Burstein spent time with the Columbus Wardogs and Albany Conquest of the af2 and the Grand Rapids Rampage in the AFL.

Burstein has lived in Southwest Florida for the past 2 years and started his own business with former Firecats kicker Matt Groff after leaving arena football in 2005.

“I’d been seeing him around lately,” Firecats coach Kevin Bouis said. “McKinney stayed with him during camp and he’s been out to a couple of games. I got word he was in shape and interested in playing so we invited him in. Being the player of the year in ’04, he obviously knows the game and he’s hungry. He wants to compete for a championship; he’s definitely got that fire and that’s the kind of guy we need.”

The 4-3 Florida Firecats host the 3-3 Mahoning Valley Thunder at home this Saturday May 19th. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm EST. Tickets are on sale now. Call the Firecats box office at 390-CATS (2287). Fans can listen to the game online at www.FloridaFirecats.com, www.NBC-2.com & www.ABC-7.com.
