A Look Across The Field at the Albany Conquest

A Look Across The Field By Adam Berti

The Florida Firecats migrate north to the Times Union Center in Albany for the first time ever in af2 league history to play a team that struggled in the first two games, but has overcome those defeats to go on a two game winning streak this season. The Conquest will look to use this momentum to knock off the Firecats, who are in a completely opposite situation winning their first three games before going on a two game losing skid at home.

The first and only meeting between these two teams happened last year in week 14. The Firecats defeated the Conquest 66-56 at home in Germain Arena. The Conquest jumped out to an early 21-6 lead, but the Firecats came right back scoring 22 points in the 2nd quarter to tie it as 28 all heading into the brake. The see-saw scoring continued as both teams posted 21 points in the 3rd. The Firecats got there only defensive stop in the second half with minutes left. This stop led to a Florida field goal that would put the game out of reach for the Conquest.

Albany’s 14th ranked offense will have a lot of work to do going up against the #1 one defensive team in the league only allowing 33.2 points per game and 200.2 yards per game this season. QB Ryan Hart with a passer rating of 124.3, 3rd in the league, will need to find his receivers early and often in order to tame the Firecats ferocious defense. Receiver’s Bakari Brown and Antwun Williams will need to protect the football as the Firecats DB’s have intercepted a league high 12 passes this season.

Albany’s defense, tied for seventh in the league allowing 226.2 yards per game will have their work cut out for them as Florida has thrown a league best 29 TD’s and 1300 yards already this year. If there is a weakness for the Firecats it’s from 10 and in. Florida has struggled in the redzone so far this season converting on only 14-25 opportunities or 56% 2nd to last in the “deuce” and Albany isn’t giving up a lot of points either, only 41 per game. The Conquest also have been stout against the run giving up less than 2 yards per carry on average.

Will this season’s match up between these two teams become an extension of last year’s impressive offensive performance by both teams? Or will the Firecats defense bite down on the Conquest and there roster chock full of rookies? Watch the match up May 5, 2007 to find out.
