Firecats Chris Morant to Play with AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo

Estero, FL- Florida Firecats FB/LB Chris Morant becomes the team’s 4th player to move up to the AFL after signing with the New Orleans VooDoo. Morant will join DS Cory Bailey with the VooDoo becoming the 2nd player from the Firecats 2006 South Division Championship team to sign with the team from the Crescent City.

Morant has played for Florida in each of the last 3 seasons including the Firecats 2004 Arena Cup Championship Team. Last year he appeared in 8 games rushing for 3 TD’s and registering 18.5 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 interception.

Chris spent part of 2006 with the AFL’s Kansas City Brigade. While in K.C. he was awarded with the Brigades’ “Community Service Award”. He had also been nominated for the AFL’s Al Lucas Hero Award, for his contributions to the community and to the game of Arena Football.

In College he was an All-American at James Madison, Morant broke the school’s career sack record, previously held by Charles Haley, by getting to the opposing Quarterback 22 times. He was named Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1999 and 1st team all-conference in 1999 and 2000.

“Chris is a special player,” said Firecats President and GM Chris Vallozzi. “He has a knack for making big plays. It’s great that he’s getting an opportunity to play in New Orleans and even better that Bailey is there too. It speaks well of our coaching staff and our organization as a whole when players move to the AFL.”
