Estero, FL- The arenafootball2 (af2) Florida Firecats brought kickers Garret Rivas, Gary Cismesia, and Mike Adams into camp on one day waivers to compete for a roster spot Tuesday. All three kickers have ties to Florida and have built impressive resumes throughout their respective kicking careers.

Garret Rivas, former University of Michigan kicker and the Wolverines All-Time leading scorer is a definite option for the Firecats in 2009. Rivas played in four games for the Firecats in 2008. He played his prep ball at Tampa Jesuit, the same high school as Firecats Head Coach Kevin Bouis.

During his time with the Firecats last season, Rivas booted a 25-yard field goal and connected on 90 percent of his extra point attempts, racking up a total 26 points for the Firecats in the 2008 season. Coach Bouis said “Rivas has experience with us and kicking in our arena, he also showed off a very strong leg tonight in practice.”

Gary Cismesia, former Florida State University kicker and Lakewood Ranch High School graduate, could be another option for Coach Bouis and the Firecats. Cismesia, is one of the most accurate kickers in FSU school history and among the Seminoles' All-Time leading scorers.

Cismesia caught the attention of the Firecats coaching staff during an open tryout earlier in the year. “Cismesia was very solid on his onside kicks tonight,” noted Bouis. His ability could prove to be a valuable weapon in the Firecats special teams.

The third kicker brought into camp for evaluation is Mike Adams, former af2 Daytona Beach Thunderbirds and Citadel Bulldogs player. Adams attended Dr. Phillips H.S. in Orlando, Fla.

Adams was the full-time kicker for the Thunderbirds in 2008. He connected on 32.4 percent of his field goal attempts last season including a season long 51-yarder. Adams was the team’s second leading scorer with 86 points. “Mike has the most experience of the group, kicking pretty much full-time last season for Daytona,” noted Bouis. He converted on 80 percent of his extra point attempts last season.

“We’ve got a tough decision to make at that position,” Bouis said. “All three guys have tremendous potential.”

The Firecats will hold their second scrimmage Thursday March 12th at Estero High School beginning at 6pm. Final cuts will be made after the team movie reviews latest film from the scrimmage. The scrimmage is open to the public.

Florida opens the 2009 season at Germain Arena against division rival South Georgia on March 21st.
