Firecats Add Fourteen Receivers and Defensive Backs to 2009 Camp Roster PDF

Estero, FL- The arenafootball2 (af2) Florida Firecats announced the addition of 14 receivers and defensive backs to their 2009 training camp roster today including former Florida Gator Tremain McCollum, Cincinnati Bengal Jerrid Gaines and Virginia Tech Hokie Josh Hyman.

“Hyman was a big physical receiver for Virginia Tech, Gaines brings NFL experience and McCollum is a player who’s used to playing in big game situations in the SEC,” Firecats Coach Kevin Bouis said.

Former Firecats Bruce Gordon, James Pauni and Kris Thomas will look to don the purple and red again this season along with the 11 newcomers. “We have invited a lot of receivers to camp to make sure we get the best guys out there. Two keys in the off-season were upgrading the offensive line and solidifying the receiver position,” added Bouis. “It’s time for the veteran guys to step up and if they’re not up to the task, then we have other players looking to prove themselves.”

Keith Brown – 6, 215, University of Rhode Island; A Jacksonville native, Brown played for Rhode Island from 2001-2005 appearing in 21 games catching 28 passes for 682 yards and four touchdowns. He was a free agent signee of the Detroit Lions in 2006.

Jerrid Gaines – 5-11, 194, Miami University of Ohio; A two-year starter he played in 51 games as a cornerback for the Redhawks winning four division titles and the 2003 MAC Championship. Gaines spent time with both the Cleveland Brown and Cincinnati Bengals.

Bruce Gordon – 5-10, 190, Temple University; The Naples native appeared in 11 games for the Firecats in 2008 finishing with 29 receptions for 237 yards and three touchdowns. He played just one year at Temple in ‘05 snagging 42 catches for 601 yards with a touchdown on a team that averaged just nine points per game.

David Heard – 6, 190, Mississippi State University; A three-year starter for the Bulldogs Heard played in 46 games collecting 123 tackles. He played for the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in ’07.

Demetrius Hodges – 5-9, 195, East Carolina University; The West Palm Beach native registered 48 tackles and two interceptions from 2004-2005 for the Pirates.

Lamar Hughes – 6, 175, Reedley College; A 2003 All-Valley Conference 1st team selection as a freshman, Hughes played in 15 games for the af2’s Daytona Beach Thunderbirds in 2008. He led Daytona with 1,226 kick return yards and two returns for touchdowns. Hughes snared 33 receptions for 448 yards and eight touchdowns.

Josh Hyman – 5-10, 195, Virginia Tech; A member of the 2007 ACC Championship Team he played in 52 games collecting 82 receptions for 1,142 yards and six touchdowns for the Hokies. He was an undrafted free agent for the St. Louis Rams in 2008.

Tremain McCollum – 5-8, 185, University of Florida; He played in 36 games for the Gators from 2002-2007 including the ’06 National Championship Game. The af2 rookie runs a 4.42 40-yard dash.

Darren Paige – 6-1, 185, Miami University of Ohio; Began at Miami before transferring to the University of Findlay where he led the Oilers in receiving for three straight seasons finishing with 118 career receptions for 1,461 yards, Last year he played for the af2’s Peoria Pirates hauling in 25 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns.

James Panui – 5-9, 195, University of Central Florida; Panui played in nine games for the Firecats in ’08 finishing with 34 receptions for 315 yards and eight touchdowns. He averaged 22.6 yards per kick return for the team as well.

Byron “Bud” Phillips – 6’1”, 185, North Carolina A&T; Phillips was a three-year letterman for the Aggies. He played for the af2’s South Georgia Wildcats in 2008.

Torris Rutledge – 6’3”, 200, Troy University; Rutledge played in 38 games for the Trojans collecting 36 receptions for 486 yards and four touchdowns from 2002-2005. A native of Reddick, Florida he played for the af2’s Daytona Beach Thunderbirds in ‘08, leading the team with 92 receptions for 767 yards and seven touchdowns.

Kris Thomas – 6-2, 205, Florida International University; Thomas played in 26 games for the Panthers from 2001-2003 registering 65 tackles and five interceptions. Hailing originally from Honduras, Thomas enters his third season in the af2 after appearing in 15 games over the past two seasons with the Firecats. He has 35.5 tackles and three interceptions for Florida.

Bryant Tisdale – 5-11, 185, University of Texas at El Paso; Tisdale finished his senior season with 60 tackles and two interceptions at UTEP. Was a member of the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm in ‘07. He played for the Daytona Beach Thunderbirds in ’08 leading the team with 34 tackles and two interceptions in just nine games.

Players will report to training camp on Saturday February 28th. The Firecats can bring up to 35 players into camp. The roster must be trimmed to 22 before the start of the season. Florida opens the 2009 season at home against division rival South Georgia on March 21st.
