Estero, FL - The arenafootball2 (af2) Florida Firecats partnered with Lee County schools and Lee County Parks and Recreation for the fifth annual Lee County Elementary Special Olympics Field Day at Lakes Park in Ft. Myers, Fla. on Friday, April 17, 2009.

Special needs students from eight different elementary schools participated in events like long jump, obstacle races, tee ball, soccer and a long toss event. Each event was run by a Firecats player. The players encouraged the kids to be active, have fun, and showed them they can compete.

Amanda Guiterrez, Lee County Parks and Recreation Special Olympics Coordinator stated, “We want the kids to feel like they can play and compete with their peers and siblings.”

Firecats; Chris Wallace, Magic Benton, Demetrius Hodges, Chris McKinney, Garret Rivas, James Panui, Jerrid Gaines, Bryant Tisdale and Head Coach Kevin Bouis attended the event to help out and support the children.

Quarterback Chris Wallace, af2’s all-time leading passer, stood out as a great inspiration and teacher to all the kids. “We want to be able to give back to the community and show people we are more than just football players. Life isn’t just about winning and losing. It is great to see them out here running around and enjoying being kids.” Wallace is the Director of Guidance at the Florida Christian Institute and works with children K-12 on a daily basis.

Not only did all the students get to meet the Firecats players, every child that participated received free tickets to Saturday night’s game against the Kentucky Horsemen in a South Division matchup at Germain Arena.
