Firecats getting ready for the season opener!
This year’s team is lead by veteran QB Ken Mastrole, who has a very dynamic and talented core of receivers to work with this year.
Look toward Anthony Snead (from the Macon Knights) and Cainon Lamb who returns to the AF2. These two players average over 17 Touchdowns a season and over 81 yards a game.
Moving to the line, with the addition of Dante Booker a 6- 3 285 pound OL/DL and you have a force to be reckoned with. Booker has already promised to keep his QB, who is also his roommate “safe and untouched”. Coach Bennett commented he had not heard that promise but hopes Booker can make it a reality.
Add just signed Victor Hall (OL/DL), future AFL hall of famer, who moves from line coach last year to player this year. His experience in the NFL and AFL will be invaluable to this year’s squad. Hall brings that last bit of size and strength Florida needed to solidify their OL/DL lineup. They look to be a force to be reckoned with this year; Mastrole should get lots of time in the pocket to work with.
Overall this years squad tells me they feel the team chemistry is the best they have seen or felt in years. The Firecats talked about how they think everyone will be able to work as a team, which should hopefully get them to a ring. Last year they got close but Macon knocked the Firecats out of the race for the ring early.
That knockout is something the players will think about when they take to the field this season. The fact they have been so close and so talented the last few years but never got to the big game, is a thought that drives them. A player commented the third time’s the charm or so we can hope. It will take a lot of hard work but this year’s team is ready for the challenge.
Ready but not over confidant, which is the right way to think going into any game. Coach Bennett says he knows that Bossier City is an improved team, one that did not do anything great last year and came out in week one to beat Birmingham 63-41. That kind of turnaround has to be recognized.
The Battlewings are better than they were last year but to be fair the Firecats look to be a year older, a year wiser and with a few key additions a little more solid overall than they were last season. What does that mean? Well you hope it means that they will enjoy the same kind of success they had last season, but with a journey that lasts a little bit longer. A trail that gets the Firecats to the championship… if they miss it this year it won’t be for lack of talent or lack of desire, that’s for sure.
