| Team Preview: Utah State Aggies |
Season 2009 Review: start the 2009 season saw a new leader in Logan and Gary Anderson made the transition from assistant to the Utah Utes to a guy with the Aggies lead. Andersen is a program that was only 3-9 in 2008 and has won only five games from mid-2006 campaign, meaning nothing would be easy for the former Junior College All-American.Nevertheless, Anderson managed to get some tough matches with his crew the first few weeks of the season as they fought hard in the loss against Utah and Texas A & M on the road, several meetings that had disaster written all over them to get. Tim first home match campaign designed to 53-34 win against Southern Utah, and in fact all but one of the following five outings saw the Aggies play tight Matchups who decided by four points or less. Unfortunately, during this process, only the 23-21 final against visiting Louisiana Tech group is in favor of the USU, but at least the Aggies showed that the rest of the Western Athletic Conference is not going to convince them all. After winning the LaTech Aggies ran almost from Fresno State (31-27) and played tough against Hawaii (49-36) in a loss in Honolulu before dumping at San Jose State 24-9 home victory. To jump over Boise State was not expected and do not come to fruition, but USU scored a moral victory delivering three goals against one of the strongest defenses in the nation. Feeding off their positive experiences against the Broncos, Aggies turned and logged 52-49 victory against Idaho in an exciting finale of the season that the team is a victory for the first time since 2007. Coach Anderson has his work cut out for him, but at least here is not all that high and most of his predecessors in recent decades. In fact, you have to go back to Phil Krueger in 1970, which ended with a 21-12 mark three years until the last coach to his tenure with the Aggies with a record better than .500 was found. One of the points more disturbing is the one that says Aggies to back-to-back matches won only once since 2003 is not called that has not finished above .500 since I was 6-5 in 1996. 2010 ANALYSIS:Quote: "From the offensive standpoint our goal is very, very simple, it's our team goal ... it is better that what is costing us games last year," said coach Andersen in its simplest terms. "We moved the ball up and down the field, sometimes we struggled in the red zone, sometimes we do not timely turnovers really hurt our football team ... and mental punishment, we must improve in this area in order to enable the next step." Moving the ball up and down the field again this season for the Aggies will be quarterback Diondre Borel, who led the WAC and was ranked 15th in the nation in total offense last year, with an average of 278.6 YPG. With more than 1,000 career rushing feet, Borel is a threat to start every time he accepts the ball from center and that can only be an advantage for the signal-caller when he joined in 2010 and became a player trying to coach Andersen knows that it can be. "I think Diondre Borel has prepared a huge year ... he wears as a leader on the football team and much more for him as a natural leader on and off the field is a big step for the quarterback." Although it will Borel yard run to the ball, the primary ball carrier for the Aggies back Robert Turbin, who was third in the WAC in 2009 with 108 YPG, stat, which is good enough to earn him All-WAC second team is not. Besides turbine is also a great safety valve of the backfield, led all league running backs with 34.8 YPG through the air. Production work Borel and is much easier Turbin back four starters along the offensive line, a mix of juniors and seniors who have worked together on this offense a step in the right direction to get. With time in the pocket of linemen and Borel will find ample opportunity for one of the few wide outs like Eric channel that has the potential last season with 27 receptions, but scored just one TD over 12 games. Defense: As someone who is very successful defensive coordinator at Utah before taking Aggies, Coach Andersen is the first realized that his unit does not realize his full potential last year. "We are playing and our children ran to the football, they struggled, but we were not good at defense. We need better and put that 100 percent of me. That's my background, this is where I mostly my coaching career and I will be heavy emphasis on this year. " Coach Anderson will be leaning on a very junior linebacker Bobby Wagner, only all-WAC first team for the Aggies before the season. Wagner led the league in total with 115 deals, and averaged nearly nine stops per contest, when the conformation champion against the enemy. Fellow junior Kyle Gallagher and Junior Keiaho will patrol the midfield for the Aggies The secondary is deep in the senior leadership, led by Chris Randle and corner back Curtis Marsh, so hopefully that will help the group, about one hundred and first order in the country last year with almost 250 YPG allowed through the air. Unfortunately, not all blame is placed at the feet of the secondary, as a small defense is equally to blame one years ago, when the opponent is allowed 205.5 YPG crank, and 110th units in the country. Put all this together and the Aggies are 113th in total defense and 107 in scoring defense, allowing 34.0 PPG. Special teams: All the right steps will again be part of Peter Caldwell, unless a drastic change in plans. Senior called on 69 punts a year ago and averaged solid 42.2 meters. As he landed 27 of those shots within a 20-yard line, he saw the land for 11 touch back, and two more are blocked, so it's certainly room for improvement for him and his patron. Stanley Morrison Jr., the top receiver for the Aggies back after reeling in 33 passes for 616 yards and three touchdowns, the call for the punter will also return after an average of eight meters per occasion last year. Williams Kerwynn 25.1 meters per kickoff return in '09, thanks in large part on the average 75-yard effort, and will again have the opportunity to take a break for the end zone this fall. Outlook: Oklahoma Sooners are the main threat for the Aggies, when the two teams kicking off the season against each other. In addition to meeting with the Idaho State a week later, the non-conference schedule for Utah State was not easy, considering that the team and the confrontation with San Diego State and BYU in the Mountain West over the conference. However, SDSU is by no means a dominant team, but the game play on the road, sandwiched between the WAC opener against Fresno State, a meeting with the Cougars at home, there is still enough to test that USU rattle. After a couple of open dates on the calendar will certainly help in recovery to offer players and bruises, but the Aggies really getting away from the last week of November so that they can only travel to Boise State in the first week of December? Until then the post season picture should be completed, and the odds are on the Utah State will not be part of it. |
